Christmas is a time for hosting home get-togethers for family and friends. As the mulled wine flows and your guests become increasingly merry, drinks will inevitably be spilled on your pristine carpet. Arming yourself with the kit and knowledge to tackle mulled wine spills will prevent carpet catastrophes over Christmas.
What to do when a spill occurs?
Everyone swears by their own cleaning hacks, but the most important asset in the event of a mulled wine spill is speed. The sooner you tackle the stain, the easier it will be to remove. Having said that, it’s crucial not to go in all guns blazing scrubbing at the floor! Rubbing will set the stain and make it virtually impossible for you to remove. Here’s what to do instead:
Step 1. Blot with a clean, damp cotton cloth to soak up excess liquid.

Step 2. Dab from the edges inwards to avoid spreading the stain.

Step 3. Sparkling water can help lift the stain but use it sparingly.

Step 4. Diluted white vinegar is another useful cleaning agent.

Step 5. Don’t pour white wine on the stain – that would be a waste!

Other Quick Steps to Remove Mulled Wine Stains From the Carpet
1. Use Club Soda

Club soda can help remove red wine stains thanks to its carbonation, which breaks down the wine’s pigments.
- After blotting the stain, pour a small amount of club soda on it.
- Blot again and leave it overnight.
- If the stain is still there, repeat the process until it disappears.
2. Use Dish Soap and Vinegar

White vinegar is great for neutralizing red wine stains, and dish soap helps lift the residue.
- Blot the stain with a cloth or paper towel.
- Mix 1 tablespoon of dish soap, 1 tablespoon of white vinegar, and 2 cups of water.
- Pour a small amount of the mixture onto the stain and blot repeatedly until the stain is gone.
3. Use Salt

Salt is perfect for absorbing dried wine stains.
- Dampen the dried stain with a little water.
- Cover it with a generous amount of salt. Don’t scrub or blot.
- Leave it overnight. By morning, the salt should be pink and crystalized.
- Vacuum up the salt.
4. Use Stain Removal Products
If home remedies don’t work, try a carpet stain remover designed for tough stains.
- Always test the product on a small, hidden area of the carpet first to ensure it won’t fade or damage the fabric.
- Follow the product’s instructions to tackle the stain effectively.
